Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state early analysis suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
City officials stated they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior representative stated the vandalism left him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the killing of nine individuals by a shooter targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
